This information and Resource Guide, originally compiled by the East Bay Consortium for Elder Abuse Prevention, has been revised and updated with the assistance of Adult Protective Services, Legal Assitance for Seniors, and Ombudsman, Inc. Adult Protective Services
The Adult Protective Services Unit of the County Department of Social Services investigates complaints on behalf of persons residing in private homes. A social worker makes a complete assessment by a home visit.

East Bay Consortium for Elder Abuse Prevention
Established in 1984, renamed Elder Abuse Prevention in 1995. EAP is a coalition of more than 150 public and private agencies and individuals in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Its mission is to coordinate, improve, and develop services which prevent and resolve the problems of elder abuse and promote greater cooperation within the service system. EAP provides training and technical assitance, multi-disciplinary consultation, information, and referral.

Legal Assitance for Seniors
The mission of LAS is to assure the well-being of seniors by protecting, defending, and advocating for the legal rights and benefits to which they are entitled. It is the only legal services program in Alameda County which serves an exclusively elderly population. LAS has provided legal advice, counsel, representation, and education to thousands of county residents aged 60 years and over since it was established in 1976.

Ombudsman, Inc.
Ombudsman, Inc. was established in 1978 with the purpose of providing protection for individuals in long-term care facilities and involving the community actively in improving the quality of life and care in facilities. This is achieved through:

  1. receiving and resolving complaints by working with residents, their family members, their friends, the regulator authorities, as well as the institutions,
  2. providing public education on long-term care and alternatives,
  3. counseling famlies and providing information and referral to individuals who are in the process of selecting institutional long-term care or alternatives.
