Sneak Peek Slide Show of Discarded to Divine – A group of ASG members had the opportunity to view and photograph the garments of the Discarded to Divine exhibit. The garments are inventive and wearable pieces created by student and emerging designers from the San Francisco Bay Area using discarded clothing items from the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store.

Mini-Retreat – After the meeting portion is finished, attendees are invited and encouraged to stay for a day of sewing with sewing friends! A Mini-Retreat means you can bring any project you like – Sewing Friends means there are sure to be people to ooh and ahh over your triumphs and offer helpful advice when you get stuck.

Fit Clinic – For this mini-retreat there will be the added theme of a Fit Clinic. Bring an item you are struggling with regarding fit. It could be store bought or a sewing project and let your sewing friends offer advice and support to make it something you love.

This is an old post that never got past the draft phase, so …

Conference was great. I took 4 really good classes and one not so great, but entertaining, class. I learned how to make a bra, and using the custom fit pattern, I made one! That was so cool. I, of course, bought many kits to make bras. We shall see. That was an 8 hour class, and I was exhausted afterwards, so I drove to my friend’s house , and we drank 2 bottles of wine.

Of course, I was supposed to be at conference the next day at 7 am, but I did get there in time to have breakfast.

My second class was on fitting the upper body for plus sized women, another 8 hour class. Altho much of it was review, I got a lot out of the class, especially specifics for me. And it was tailored for the plus sized women. The third class was fitting the lower body, and that was really good. The teacher was Kathleen Cheetham of Petite Plus Patterns. It would seem that while I have a “tall” inseam of 35 inches, I’m petite from hip to top of head. I bought one pattern from her, the jean jacket. It fits me out of the envelope. I was totally exhausted after this class, so I went shopping. I met up with Veronica and Liane for dinner and margaritas. Then we went to the fashion show which was pretty much a yawn. I didn’t get back to my friend’s house until 11. They weren’t back from driving a nephew up to Taos, but the dogs had decided that I was okay. Bumper even slept with me.

Did you know that Martha Pullen is a wild thing? I had no idea.

I had class with Marla something on Sunday morning on bound buttonholes. That was good, too. It wasn’t about the traditional style, and I may never make another thread buttonhole again.

My last class was on fabric folding, and the speaker was good, but the presentation was very light. For example, when her husband was stationed in Afghanistan, she had power of attorney and bought a new house for them.

The shopping was fun, too. I managed to do pretty good resisting the fabric. Louise Cutting had fabric to die for. I’m a cotton kindagirl. There was a European fabric importer, but since I’m allergic to wool, his stuff didn’t hold much appeal for me. There was another importer but this time from the Americas and Far East. I blew a bunch of money there.

I think Fashion with Motion Sickness did well. Their booth was packed most of the time. When they had a moment, I asked how it had been, and Susan said they were doing great. Julianne has a new dress out that “might even fit” me. Quote from Julianne.

Bruno is STUPID. I love him dearly, and he is cute and sweet, but he was bred to be cute and sweet, but he doesn’t have a brain in his head. I’ve only had working and sporting group dogs, and they tend to be too smart for their own good.

Bruno is still intact. I’m still not sure what I’m going to do.

The Walnut Creek chapter of the American Sewing Guild presents:
Serger T-Shirt Workshop
With Alicia Welcher

Date: Saturday, April 25, 2009
Workshop Time: 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM (Lunch – Brown Bag)
Regular meeting will start at 9:00 AM (9am-930am social time)
Location: Odd Fellows Hall, 4349 Cowell Road, Concord, CA 94518
Cost: $30.00 ASG Members, $40.00 Non-ASG Members

Are you always finding ready-to-wear t-shirts that are too short, too long, too tight, too loose? It takes no time at all to make t-shirts that fit using your serger. And with the wide variety of fabric options and colors available in knits today, there’s no reason not to!

Sergers and knits are made for each other! The ability to adjust the differential feed makes serging knits a breeze. Inside seams are finished flawlessly, sleeves and neck facings can be attached almost instantly, and various hemming options can give the t-shirt a variety of different looks. Come join us for a t-shirt workshop where you can experience how easy it is!

As an added bonus, you will receive a quick introduction to heirloom sewing by serger and an Heirloom Nightshirt pattern and instructions where you can combine your new skills in heirloom serging and serging knits.

Supplies Needed:

T-Shirt pattern of your choice with a self fabric facing at the neckline. Recommended patterns:

Great Copy #2120 (Simple short or long-sleeve t-shirt. Pattern also includes a skirt that serges together very well.)

Butterick #B5215 (Although the drawings on this pattern make it look like the same t-shirt with three different sleeve lengths, it is not so. As the sleeves lengthen, the pattern also becomes much less fitted.)

Fabric according to the pattern instructions.

Three or four spools of thread to match or blend with fabric.

Size 80 Ballpoint or Stretch Needles.

General sewing and serging supplies (pins, scissors, tweezers, seam gauge, Wonder Tape, Fray Block, double eyed needle, etc.).

Serger in good working order with manual and all accessories needed to do a three-thread wide or four-thread overlock.

Pre-Class Preparation:

Pre-wash all fabric. Knits are very unpredictable and as such, really do need to be pre-washed.

If you do not wish to cut your original pattern, make a copy of all pattern pieces on pattern drafting material.

Cut the fabric as follows:

Cut your pattern pieces out according to the pattern instructions.

Cut several test pieces just outside the pattern cutout. Mark each test piece as to “side seam”, “neckline”, “lower hem”, etc.

Bring all other scraps to class.
