Gay Gerlack and Julianne Bramson have been busy teaching and learning techniques using some great new products for dying and discharging fabrics. They will bring their toys and let us play with them!Gay will bring her silk screens and stamps, paints, foils, and discharge paste and she will show us how to add some fun and easy surface design elements to garments, tote bags, purses, you name it! She has even rescued “ugly” scarves. We will use some simple household items to show you that you don’t always have to buy expensive equipment to get fabulous results! Learn how to make your fabric a one-of-a-kind, and how to turn ordinary fabrics into extraordinary fabric art.

Julianne has been busy studying many different shibori techniques and she will show you some of her favorites. We will wrap fabric on short lengths of PVC pipe to create the beautiful “Arashi” shibori that looks like leaves, feathers, or tree bark. It can also be done in very precise
geometric shapes. The dyes that Gay and Julianne have fallen in love with are VERY easy to use – no microwaving, no boiling, no heat setting – they just work! These dyes are color fast in silk, wool, and some rayon fabrics. They are liquid and non toxic so it is very easy to mix colors and have quick effects. Julianne will bring a small kit with fabrics to use for testing out the techniques and a pre-hemmed scarf to dye. These techniques are very low mess, but you still might want to bring an apron or wear old clothes.
