Desert of Maine

in: General

You didn’t know that Maine has a desert? Well, it does. The Desert of Maine is a good example of what happens when you don’t rotate crops, you massively clear the land, and you over graze. It’s just amazing. Maine is so green, and the land is so fertile. It’s wet. You’d never expect to find a desert there. But in less than 200 years, they devastated the land.

The trees roots are constantly being covered over with sand, so they keep putting our more roots at the surface. Sometimes the sand shifts, exposing lower levels of roots.
The edge of the desert
This was the best that I could do in capturing the edge of the desert. It really was an abrupt change.

Inside the barn
I thought all the old wood inside the barn was neat.
