Phlipphlap Bag Finis!

So I finished my bag a couple of weeks ago. I made some changes in the finishing of the bag. The pattern calls for binding sewn up the sides to close off the 2 large compartments. I elected to simply sew the sides shut.

I used belting to make the strap. I could have done a better job of covering the belting, but it works.

I omitted the dowel. The denim (aka lining) is sturdy, and the bag pretty much keeps it shape.

The snaps work well for keeping the main compartments closed, but when loaded, the bag is heavy enough to open the snaps if pulled on.

I’ve been using the bag for a couple of weeks, and I took it on travel with me. I had an overnight business trip. It worked great at my personal carryon (the one you put under the seat). It stood up (with folders and paperwork in it) and stayed to side of the under-the-seat-in-front-of-me compartment on the plane. I had plenty of foot room. I cannot say that I’ve had the same experience with a backpack. I put my lunchbox in one of the compartments, and while a little bulky, it still left me plenty of foot space.

I found that I didn’t get the interior pockets quite right. I need to make the deeper/closer the center bottom of the bag. I, just barely, had enough bag to snap it closed.

The large exterior cell phone pocket is just barely big enough for my iPhone 5C in a case; it is not wide enough for a boarding pass (letter sized paper folded into quarters). It is big enough for my badge to be stored, but adding the folded boarding pass fills it to capacity.

All in all, I am very happy with the bag. I think it looks really cool!
