Our spider

in: Gardening
banded garden spider

We had a banded garden spider in our back yard. She’s the second one that I’ve noticed in our garden. They are supposed to be common, but we’ve lived here for 20 years, and I’ve seen two. She was living in the tomatoes of 2014. When my husband cleared out the tomatoes to plant our winter garden, she leapt from the tomatoes and settled on a fence post. Somehow she made her way from the fence post into the lettuce greenhouse. Oh, I figure she’s a she because the females are an order of magnitude larger than the males. If she’s a he, I don’t want to meet a she, what?

Anyway, she survived the winter. I did some research on her last summer or fall, and the references said that she would only live a year, but they were vague on whether or not she would die because of the cold weather or because she was old. I was starting to think that she would live for more than a year, but she has disappeared from our garden. I don’t know if she died and fell and disappeared or if a bird got her.

Before she died, we had zero aphids in the greenhouse. Since she died, we’ve had aphids.
