Becoming a woman

in: General

I started when I was 10. It was awful. It wasn’t that I was totally unprepared. I knew what it was, but I was in 4th grade. Elementary schools are not set up to deal with menstruating youngsters. And my flow was heavy for 4 or 5 days with accompanying cramps.

But it got worse. My mother signed me up for girl scouts camp, and it was the same week I got my period. That was just awful. I wasn’t using tampons. I was expected to swim and do all sorts of active stuff with a big fat pad on leaking blood all over the place with a bunch of little girls who were merciless in their teasing.

I never went back to camp.
