Field Trip

Tony’s class had a field trip to LLNL’s Discovery Center. I love watching Tony in the classroom. He is always eager to participate and answer questions.

What takes more energy? LED lights, fluorescent
lights, or incandescent?

Working hard to light the bulbs

The tour guide brought out a Van de Graaf generator. He had four kids come up and hold a wooden dowel, a lucite cylinder, a copper pipe, and a pvc pipe. He touched it to each of the tubes. The kid holding the copper pipe was pretty scared but also pretty sure that the adults wouldn’t let him get hurt. The arcing was impressive. The look on his face was priceless. I wish I’d thought to record it.

After that demonstration, the guide asked for a volunteer to touch the tip of the generator. Tony volunteered. Watch the girls in the foreground as he touches the generator.
